STYLE
BRIGHTEN PAS TY SKIN
Remember this in fall and
winter: Earth tones, browns,
and olive greens look soft
against pale skin. Reds,
oranges, and pinks bring out
rosiness in your skin. “It
almost looks as if you’ve gotten some sun,” Fahrner says.

BROADEN NARROW
SHOULDERS
While a structured suit jacket
creates the illusion of larger
shoulders, a sweater should fit
you snugly to accentuate the
shoulders you already have.
Contrasting body and arm colors can also add dimension.

SHAPE THE REAR VIEW
Don’t hide your flat butt in
relaxed-fit jeans. Choose a
slimmer or tapered style that
hugs your backside. Flap pockets can enhance a pancake
posterior; you’ll be glad they’re
there when you catch her
checking you out from behind.

DISGUISE
YOUR GUT
Those last 10
pounds have a
preferred spot to
settle: the area
formerly known
as your abs. Until
you bust the
bulge, memorize
these sneaky
style slimmers.
Embrace
geometry
Look for shapes that
create the illusion of an
inverted triangle—broad
shoulders, narrow waist.
Structured blazers and
shawl-collar cardigans
keep balance by adding
a bit of bulk to your neck
and shoulders.
Ask for a
regular
Rather than a relaxed or
slim fit—neither of which
will flatter your abdominal acreage—opt for a
“regular fit” dress shirt.
This style won’t hug your
belly or bury it in excessive fabric. Instead, it will
fit uniformly, with a little
room to move.
Skip the zips
Avoid wearing zip-front
sweaters and cinched-waist jackets, which just
draw the eye to your
problem area. Buttons
are much more forgiving.
Ease your
belt a notch
“Wearing a belt that’s too
tight cuts you off in an
unflattering way,” says
Piperlime’s Fahrner, who
suggests buying a belt
t wo sizes larger than your
pants so you’ll have more
strap to tuck in a loop.
Never cinch
A cinched waist creates
the illusion of bulk even
when there isn’t any.
When you wear a sweater,
opt for one without
an elastic waistband
and you’ll still look sleek.
